This Sunday was awash in controversy as President Donald Trump was on a three-day Twitter rant calling for the nation to boycott football games (AS IF?!!) and for the National Football League (NFL) to fire any player that took a knee during the national anthem. The three-day rant resulted in almost every player and team in the NFL taking a knee, locking arms in solidarity, or remaining in the locker room during the playing of the national anthem.
While our eyes were all on the protest sparked by Trump’s absurd Twitter rants, a lone gunman committed an horrific act in Antioch, Tennessee resulting in one death and injury to six other parishioners. An eighth person was pistol-whipped according to the spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
The suspect, Emanuel Kidega Samson, 25, was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after suffering non-life-threatening injuries during the incident. According to police, Samson used to be a member of the church. He is reported as being a native of Sudan, he originally went to college in Flint, Michigan, and then attended college in Tennessee.
He has been released from the hospital and is in police custody. Charges stemming from the shooting will be murder and multiple counts of attempted murder.

The first call of “multiple shots fired” was received by police at 11:15 a.m. CT according to police records. They responded to the scene at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch. The gunman was in the parking lot as services were letting out. The first person shot was a woman walking to her car. The gunman then entered the church where approximately 50 people were still making their way toward exits.
After shooting up the church seemingly at random, the gunman accidentally shot himself.

This horrific incident should serve as a reminder that while we pay attention to the narcissist in the White House and allow him to control the message our news people are relaying to us we miss out on the real things happening around us. There is more happening in this country that needs to be addressed than the Twitter feed of our toddler-in-chief.
