Saint Marc Pub-Cafe, Bakery & Cheese Affinage in Huntington Beach, CA is getting some free publicity via Facebook and a disgruntled customer. Diana Carrillo and a few of her friends met up at the restaurant recently. Carillo’s friend and sister arrived first, ordered a drink and their waiter answered them with, “I need to see your proof of residency. I need to make sure you’re from here before I serve you.” When Carillo arrived, the waiter asked the same of her. She immediately spoke with the manager:
After fully digesting what he said, we all got up and left to speak to the manager. For a few seconds I thought maybe he was being a smart ass or joking but the fact that he said I need to make sure you’re from here before I serve you was completely unacceptable. How many others has he said this to? I hope this employee is reprimanded for his actions. No establishment should tolerate discriminatory actions from their employees.
When the waiter was asked by his superiors why he asked that question, his response was that he was just joking around. Most of us are asked for an ID when we order drinks, it’s a matter of course. However, when a person says anything about proof of residency, that automatically feels discriminatory because it is. Thankfully, the idiot was fired and the restaurant issued a public apology.
This very unfortunate incident has been handled internally through the termination of the employee at fault. We also contacted the guest and plan to donate 10 percent of this weekend’s sales to the charity of her choice, Orange County Immigrant Youth United. In no way are the actions of this former employee representative of the Saint Marc brand nor are they reflective of the opinions of anyone else on our team, including executive management.
We all need to be watchful of the small slights – the discrimination that seems small and insignificant. No discrimination is minor. Allowing anyone a pass is normalizing it and makes you an asshole.
