On Monday, Fox and Friends reported that James Comey leaked confidential information when he released his memos on Trump. Actually, they stated that the information was “top secret.” Trump supporters pounced on the information in defense of their president. They felt vindicated as this report was proof that the FBI investigation is indeed a witch hunt.
However, today before the headlines, Fox and Friends co-host, Steve Doocy, issued a retraction.
Yesterday on this program we aired and tweeted this story saying former FBI director James Comey leaked memos containing top secret information. We were mistaken in that. According to the report, half of the memos contain information classified at the secret or confidential, not top-secret. Markings of the documents in which Mr. Comey leaked are, at this point, unclear. Just wanted to straighten that out.
That was it. No apology – I guess that would be asking too much. Although Fox ridiculed CNN mercilessly for a retraction they made last month. Why apologize for alternative facts when the damage has already been done?
Trump retweeted the Fox story and then tweeted about it in his own simple words:
James Comey leaked CLASSIFIED INFORMATION to the media. That is so illegal!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 10, 2017
In this instance, I will give Fox some credit. They retracted their story, but as of this writing, Trump’s tweet is still hanging out there for all his followers to read and believe because they believe everything that man spouts, no matter how ridiculous. It’s completely sobering to realize that Fox News has more integrity than the President of the United States.
Watch the rarity of Fox retracting a story that they pulled out of their asses:
