Top Republicans Line Up Behind Bob Corker, Ready To Square Off Against Angry Man-Child In ‘Adult Daycare Center’

One of the hallmarks of being an adult with good sense is knowing when and where to pick your fights. This is especially true in the world of politics, where more gets done by working together than by bumping heads. Trump, being the nemesis of expectation, never learned that, and it’s why he’s facing top Republicans yet again who are moving in to defend Bob Corker after Trump and the senior Republican exchanged shots on social media.

Late last week, Corker announced that he’d be retiring in 2018, but that he’d be staying on and would vote against the Republican tax plan if it increased the deficit. Trump responded with a tweet claiming Corker “begged” him for an endorsement and “didn’t have the guts” to run without one.

Trump’s endorsement, of course, is a guaranteed path to victory — just ask Luther Strange.  Everyone remembers him, right? The Alabama Republican Trump campaigned for who lost to Theocrat Roy Moore? Trump would like you to forget at any rate — he deleted any evidence he supported Strange after Strange lost.

Corker fired back by noting the White House was little better than an “adult daycare center.” Since Trump has all the political guile of decayed roadkill it caused him to go off on yet another tantrum, this time posting a video of first responders in Puerto Rico and claiming that he wasn’t getting enough credit for handing out paper towels.

The whole affair has drawn battle lines again between a wary Republican-controlled Congress and a witless Republican-controlled White House as top Republicans, like Mitch McConnell, line up behind Corker.

According to the Associated Press, The McConnell said of Corker:

Sen. Corker is a valuable member of the Senate Republican caucus. He’s also on the budget committee and a particularly important player as we move to the floor on the budget next week and he’s an important part of our team.

And when asked to respond to Corker’s criticisms, McConnell gave this gem of a nonanswer:

He’s an important part of our team and he’s a particularly important part of the budget debate which will be on the floor next week.

Thus, the Republican Civil War continues.

It was widely noted before Trump took office there was a good chance he would be the worst thing to ever happen to the Republican Party. That has proven prescient beyond any shadow of a doubt. The bigger question lies with the party across the aisle  — can the Democrats capitalize on this for once and not seize defeat from the jaws of victory?
