First, lets get this out the way:
This is more of a Pop Nation thing but screw you, I have layers! I grew up in a very theatrical household. My mother was a professional singer for a long time, my Dad would play his (deep breath) Elvis, Beatles, Monkees, Billy Joel, Elton John, David Bowie, Eagles records while he was working in his shop (Dad is a pencil pusher but he maintains a workshop in the house). I discovered other music on my own – Def Leppard, Queen, Guns n’ Roses, AC/DC, Metallica, Meat Loaf, Green Day, Snoop Dogg, Atmosphere, Linkin Park, Paramore, Prince… Whenever someone asks me what kind of music I like, I generally return with: Anything that isn’t deliberately degrading to anyone else. ANYTHING.
It was no surprise that I got involved in theater. Started with school plays and plays at my hometown church (such amazing shows as Revival! The Musical with lyrics and music by Carmen!) but then it grew into a significant passion as I got into community and semi-professional theater in late-/post-High School. I loved it so much, I even went to school for it til I realized that I wanted a family a whole lot more than the unstable lifestyle of the actor. I know people can and have done it but it seemed like a whole lot more work than I really wanted to tackle. Cuz I’m lazy. So these days, I accept the roles life has handed me – father, writer, podcaster, shower-time rockstar – and move on with my life.
We’ve now established my theater cred? Okay, good. If you were to ask me and MOST other actors what is ONE SHOW they wish they could perform in whether they are right for the role or not, I’m betting they will have a list. And on that list, somewhere near the top would be The Rocky Horror Show. I have never been so lucky as to perform in this show myself but one of my good friends got to play the role of Eddie while we were still in college (we won’t discuss how long ago that was) and will say that it was probably one of the most amazing experiences he has had on stage. So to say that I am a fan of Rocky Horror is inaccurate. I will get very melodramatic for this… I ADORE Rocky.
And, as we saw above, Rocky Horror Picture Show is coming to Fox. With an all new cast. And Adam Lambert as Eddie. (Bless my soul!) I have high hopes for this remake. It’s got all the right elements. Lavurne Cox (Orange is the New Black) playing Doctor Frank-N-Furter, Adam Lambert as Eddie, Reeve Carney (Penny Dreadful) as Riff-Raff, and Tim Curry his own self as The Criminologist… Like I said. Potential. Will I miss young Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Boswick, Meat Loaf, Richard O’Brien, and Patricia Quinn? Absolutely. But generally when dancing the Time Warp, I don’t give a crap who is singing. Just that my hands are on my hips and my knees don’t give out when I pull them in tight. Getting old sucks.
