While the conservative right celebrates Trump’s announcement yesterday that he is banning transgender people from enlisting or serving in the military, the military is not quite as eager to persecute their own troops and rightfully so. Transgender people have been serving in our military for decades. They just weren’t open about it for good reason.
Yesterday’s announcement from Trump clearly showed that he is pandering to his large and bigoted religious base. In all honesty, he’s likely pandering more so to the rich evangelicals who praise him as though he’s the second messiah sent from heaven above – and donate to his campaign that will be ongoing until he dies. He saw this as an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. He makes his announcement to appease the ultra-conservatives and thereby creates a distraction from the healthcare nonsense that threatens to fuck us all. It could also be a distraction from his love affair with Putin – as he recently announced that the US will no longer be aiding Syrian rebels in the hopes of keeping Assad in power; one of Putin’s goals. We could continue, but we will spare you all the possible reasons Trump needs a distraction.
I know there are questions about yesterday’s announcement on the transgender policy by the President. There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President’s direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance. In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect. As importantly, given the current fight and the challenges we face, we will all remain focused on accomplishing our assigned missions.
While this suggests that Trump’s announcement yesterday may still affect transgender people serving in the future, as of right now the military is carrying on as usual. That includes doing their damn jobs and not worrying about a co-workers’ genitalia.
If anyone of any gender chooses to serve their country by enlisting in our military, why should we concern ourselves with their gender or sexual orientation? They are braver than our “leader” – you know, the one who couldn’t serve because of “heel spurs“.
