How do you discredit potentially damaging revelations about a candidate? You attack the source and ascribe ill intent behind the revelation. It’s what politicians have been doing as long as there have been politicians. It doesn’t always work, of course, but it can be very effective.
Especially when the people behind the leak and the people benefiting from it can’t keep their mouths shut.
A lot of people, myself included, found the timing of the DNC email release to be suspicious. That suspicion ramped up to 11 when the FBI started murmuring that the Russian government was involved. Hillary Haters dismissed this as the Democrats just trying to cover their ass and nothing will distract them from hating Hillary, dammit!
But then a lot of extremely reputable news sources started reporting that, yeah, the Russians were involved. Since then, it’s become clear that a hostile foreign country is trying to control the outcome of an American election.
Meanwhile, Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, was so pleased with his efforts to hurt Hillary Clinton, he couldn’t stop himself from bragging about it:
In the interview, Mr. Assange told a British television host, Robert Peston of the ITV network, that his organization had obtained “emails related to Hillary Clinton which are pending publication,” which he pronounced “great.” He also suggested that he not only opposed her candidacy on policy grounds, but also saw her as a personal foe.
At one point, Mr. Peston said: “Plainly, what you are saying, what you are publishing, hurts Hillary Clinton. Would you prefer Trump to be president?”
His answer was essentially, “Yes” because while no one could predict what crazy shit Trump would do, Assange hates Hillary and he’d rather risk a Trump presidency.
I feel it’s important to point out that Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to not defend NATO allies from Russian invasion, a move that would turn a good chuck of Europe into a warzone within a few years at the cost of countless lives. Assange, of course, will be safe in his embassy hideout so fuck all of those people if it means Hillary doesn’t get to be president.
That’s not to mention the damage done to America under Republican rule which would destroy the lives of millions of minorities, Muslims, poor people and women. But, again, who cares? Assange has a grudge against Hillary and he HAD to let everyone know that he was trying to alter the outcome of the election.
Assange is trying to be cute by claiming there’s no proof he’s working with the Russian government but if it smells like borscht and it tastes like borscht…
And then there’s Donald Trump, calling for a press conference today so he could beg Russia to release even more damaging emails, claiming that they would be “rewarded mightily.” Considering that serious people are starting to seriously question Donald Trump’s financial ties to the Russian government and the fact that we know Russia is trying to tip the election in Trump’s favor, this is quite possibly the single WORST thing Trump could have done.
American do not like when people stick their nose in other people’s business. How do you think they’re going to react when they hear that Russia, RUSSIA, is trying to control our election? They’re going to be pissed. There’s even going to be a good chunk of the Republican electorate that is going to freak out. Remember, a lot of them still think of Russia and the scary Soviet Union trying to take over America.
And Trump just announced that he’s the next best thing to a Manchurian candidate.
The Democrats are in the odd position where redbaiting will actually work AGAINST Republicans and FOR the Democrats. Because that’s how bizarre this election cycle has become. Except it’s not really redbating if it’s true, is it?
The bottom line here is that the more Assange and Trump brag about how these Russian-based leaks are going to hurt Hillary, the less effective they’re going to be. The outrage is already starting to build that outsiders have the gall to interfere with our elections and it’s inevitably going to hurt Trump while insulating Hillary and the DNC from any further revelations.
If Trump and Assange had kept their mouths shut, they would have reaped the maximum benefit from whatever ginned up controversy is coming down the road. But they couldn’t. They HAD to beat their chests and mark their territory so everyone would know how awesome and clever they are being tools for the Russian government.
Thank God for their massive egos.
