Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon just showed his white supremacist colors yet again when he attacked Catholics in a new interview. Spouting his usual anti-immigrant vitriol, Bannon said the Catholic church is only speaking out about Trump’s attacks on immigration because they “need illegal aliens to fill the churches.”
Speaking to 60 Minutes, Bannon said the Catholic church has been “terrible about” supporting Trump’s anti-immigration agenda. He specifically noted recent remarks made by Cardinal Timothy Dolan in New York regarding the Trump administration’s move to destroy the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program put in place by former President Obama.
You know why? Because [they have been] unable to really, to come to grips with the problems in the church. They need illegal aliens. They need illegal aliens to fill the churches. It’s obvious on the face of it.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions officially announced the end of the DACA program on Tuesday.
I totally respect the pope, and I totally respect the Catholic bishops and cardinals on doctrine. This is not about doctrine. This is about sovereignty of a nation. And in that regard, they’re just another guy with an opinion.
Bannon is well known for his white supremacist views and his attacks on Catholics are just one more example of this. Anti-Catholicism has been alive and well in America since the first Protestant settlers landed on Plymouth Rock. White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, in particular, jumped on the anti-Catholic bandwagon in later years.
The growth of the Ku Klux Klan in the early 20th century gave a new impetus to attacks – mostly verbal – on Catholics. Hugo Black, a KKK member and US senator, gave fiery anti-Catholic speeches before going on to become a defender of civil liberties on the supreme court bench.
With the election of John F. Kennedy, anti-Catholicism in the U.S. dwindled and conservative Christians eventually teamed up with over their shared interest in stopping women from having access to safe and legal abortions. But with Bannon’s newest rant, that truce may be coming to an end.
