Serena Williams Slaps Down Male Tennis Star’s Sexist Insult Like A Boss

Serena Williams is not putting up with John McEnroe’s shit. The former tennis pro and seven-time singles champion decided to comment on her status as Ridiculously Awesome Tennis Pro (RATP)  with some misogynistic remarks while trying to sell his book But Seriously in an NPR interview:

Garcia-Navarro: We’re talking about male players but there is of course wonderful female players. Let’s talk about Serena Williams. You say she is the best female player in the world in the book.

McEnroe: Best female player ever — no question.

Garcia-Navarro: Some wouldn’t qualify it, some would say she’s the best player in the world. Why qualify it?

Yes, we’re wondering that as well. Perhaps Johnny is feeling a little jealous that Serena could hand his ass to him on the court? Especially with his advanced… age.

But wait! He continues:

McEnroe: Oh! Uh, she’s not, you mean, the best player in the world, period?

Garcia-Navarro: Yeah, the best tennis player in the world. You know, why say female player?

McEnroe: Well because if she was in, if she played the men’s circuit she’d be like 700 in the world.

I don’t know, I’m pretty sure Serena trains just as hard as men. I also highly doubt she’d be 700 if she were in the men’s league. According to Buzz Bissinger in the Vanity Fair article, Serena has a staggering 23 grand slam victories spanning three decades, 72 tournament victories and has earned a hell of a lot of money while doing so. Oh yeah, and she won all seven matches at the Australian Open while pregnant. I’d like to see McEnroe do any of that.

This ridiculous interview continues to drag on with:

Garcia-Navarro: You think so?

McEnroe: Yeah. That doesn’t mean I don’t think Serena is an incredible player. I do, but the reality of what would happen would be I think something that perhaps it’d be a little higher, perhaps it’d be a little lower. And on a given day, Serena could beat some players. I believe because she’s so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke ’cause she’s been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, The U.S. Open, etc. But if she had to just play the circuit — the men’s circuit — that would be an entirely different story.

Ah, he’s trying to backtrack here, except that he already fucked up and showed us his misogynistic side, good job Johnny – no takebacks!

However, Serena wasn’t having any of this. She replied to his comments via Twitter:

She was very reserved about it, too, which is something no one can say about Johnny boy.

McEnroe later compounded all of this on “CBS This Morning” by declining to apologize for the whole thing. Stay classy, John (insert eye roll here).
