Donald Trump LOVES to use Chicago as a punching bag. Like much of the right, he uses the city as an example of how out of control crime is in America. Of course, Trump neglects to mention that Chicago is an outlier and that violent crime is significantly down nationwide from even just 10 years ago. And the fact that Chicago has a large population of blacks is just a coincidence having nothing to do with stoking fear among easily frightened white people. Still, you’d think that as president, Trump would be eager to prove his “law and order” chops by waving a hand and fixing all the crime like he promised.
Chicago’s Superintendent of Police, Eddie Johnson, on Thursday fired back after President Trump said the city needed help dealing with its violence problem, saying that the police department asked the White House for help but still hasn’t heard back from the administration.
“We’ve made requests to the White House and the Justice Department for them to support our work — from increasing federal gun prosecution to more FBI, DEA and ATF agents to more funding for mentoring, job training and more. We are still waiting for the administration’s response to our request.”
What? That cannot possibly surprise you. Trump never had any intentions of “fixing” Chicago unless it was to throw as many young black men into jail or the morgue as possible. There will be no mentoring. There will be no community outreach. There will be no government funds to increase employment. All Chicago will get is looser gun laws at the behest of the NRA, more cops and less restrictions on the use of deadly force. That’s the Republican way for dealing with crime.
If I were Chicago, I wouldn’t be asking for help from Trump, I’d be praying that he continues to ignore us before he turns the Windy City into a warzone with minority communities as the target.
