On Wednesday night, the Washington Post gave Donald Trump and awesome 71st birthday present: a revelation that he is being investigated for possible obstruction of justice:
The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.
The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump’s conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.
This completely blows Trump’s assertions that he is not under investigation, out of the water. So, of course, the Republican National Committee is freaking the fuck out and scrambling to explain it away. In fact, they sent out talking points when the story broke to do just that.

Here is some of the nonsense Republicans are supposed to repeat like good little boys and girls:
- There is no case for obstruction of justice.
- The leaks are the only crime here.
- This leak proves Mueller has struck out proving collusion and now he is trying to save face.
- Why aren’t Hillary and Loretta Lynch being investigated for obstruction of justice?
It’s pretty humorous that the RNC is claiming there was no obstruction of justice or evidence to prove collusion when they are not involved in the investigation. The reality is the only person who truly knows what there is and isn’t evidence of is Robert Mueller. And what is worse is that the right and President Trump are now attacking Mueller, someone who was appointed by the Trump Administration to lead this investigation and who is well-respected across party lines.
Finally, the Hillary Clinton/Lynch stuff is just fantastic. The email investigation has been closed for months, but the GOP is so desperate to deflect, they just continue to beat that dead horse.
I propose a game: read the tweet above, keep your ears open and let us know in the comment section every time you hear one of these talking points used today. I already heard Kenneth Starr say there is no “proof of obstruction.” How about you?
