On Monday, America experienced the latest “worst mass shooting in our country’s history” a little over a year after the last “worst mass shooting in our country’s history.” A gunman stood at the window of his 32nd-floor room in the Mandalay Bay Casino and fired on a crowd of concertgoers. By the end of the day we all heard the terrible news: 59 dead, 527 injured. The number of people affected by this shooting would be unfathomable in any other industrialized nation, but in America, it seems almost normal. That’s because the National Rifle Association (NRA) has made sure that nothing ever changes in this country. They have been so powerful, for so long and able to poison so many people that Americans believe that mass shootings are just the price we pay for freedom (Bill O’Reilly actually said that on Monday). The NRA wants everyone to think that MOAR GUNZ! is the only way to protect ourselves and the people who own those guns, the “good guys,” will stop mass shootings, robberies, home invasions, and all other crime from happening.
Of course, that didn’t happen on Monday. There was no “good guy with a gun” there to save the hundreds of people who were injured or the 59 who were killed by the Las Vegas gunman (no, the police do not count, stopping a gunman is their job). It stands to reason that the NRA would speak out, right? I mean, at the very least they would condemn this bad guy with a gun. So, what did they say? I checked out their very active Twitter and Facebook accounts to see and I found…
The NRA went completely dark on Monday.
That’s right. The organization who advocates gun ownership in this country as a way to stop bad guys like the Las Vegas shooter has issued no statements as of this writing. Why? Because their “good guy with a gun stopping a bad guy with a gun” talking point is complete and utter bullshit–and they know it.
This is not normal. Mass shootings are not normal. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!
