According to so-called “Christians” these days, religious freedom means that “Christians” are allowed to do whatever they want and hide behind their religion to avoid taking responsibility for anything. If any other religion tries to claim the same rights, the Christian Outrage Machine gets started up and red-lined to the max.
As soon as the Supreme Court of the United States made its decision on same-sex marriage, it started a new round of butthurt “Christians” pushing for laws to allow them to discriminate with impunity.
Now that Republicans have lost the same-sex marriage battle, they have decided that transgender Americans are going to be their new target. As it is, many of the anti-discrimination laws do not protect people based on their sexual identity. In other words, many states allow people to legally discriminate without a care in the world. These states, and many religious fanatics as well, vehemently oppose any attempts to provide the transgender community with the same protections provided to other minorities.
What this has illustrated is that the party who claims to worship the Constitution really has no fucking idea what is actually in it. They are especially confused about the First Amendment, which says:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Pretty straightforward that is. The government cannot make any laws favoring one religion over another, and cannot outlaw religion either. This also means that Republican lawmakers who pass bills discriminating against someone based on their own personal religious beliefs are breaking the very thing they swore to uphold. Of course, this isn’t surprising. The GOP has a long history of not paying the slightest bit of attention to the Constitution, but what it means is that it is your job, as an American, to get their asses out of office in November. Remember that when you cast your ballots, you’re not just picking our next president, you’ll be picking members of Congress as well and we desperately need Congress to turn blue.
