I’m a kid of two decades, The 80’s and The 90’s. I was born in the late 70’s, so my pre-teen years were spent with Optimus Prime and my teenage years were spent with Bobby Brown, but not in a weird way. I loved the music, toys, movies, cartoons, EVERYTHING that The 80’s had to offer and I still love it! So, what could be better than a TV show that highlights basically everything I ever loved? Nothing, that’s what. If you’re in the same boat as I am, then you should be watching The Goldbergs.
The Goldbergs is a semi-autobiographical sit-com featuring the talents of Jeff Garlan and Wendi McLendon-Covey as Mom and Dad Goldberg. The story mainly revolves around the family’s youngest son, Adam, but also features two other siblings, Barry and Erica, as well as “Pops” played by veteran actor George Segal. The show also features a “Wonder Years” type narrator voiced by comedian extraordinaire and Disney alumnus, Patton Oswalt. The semi-autobiographical portion comes from series creator and writer, Adam F. Goldberg who brings many of his real life childhood exploits to life.
So, the show itself takes place in “1980-something” and while there’s no real year-to-year continuity of the show, it features LOTS of 1980’s pop culture. In fact, one of the episodes is an homage to The Goonies and another looks at the pros and cons of submitting fake names and orders to get infinite $0.01 tapes from Columbia House. If you love The 80’s you should be watching The Goldbergs. The show just finished up its 3rd season, but you can binge watch all of the episodes on Hulu.
