The extended footage was recently released showing Philando Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her four-year-old daughter in the back of a police cruiser immediately following his death. It is perhaps one of the most heart-breaking things you will ever, ever see.
The little girl just watched her father shot for absolutely no reason by police. She sat in the back seat, in her booster, and watched a man in uniform who is supposed to protect her fire a volley of bullets at her dad because he did everything he was supposed to – except be white. Let’s be honest. Please. This man was shot because he disclosed he had a permit to carry a concealed weapon and he had the audacity of being black. In fact, he would have never been pulled over in the first place if he wasn’t racially profiled.
As she and her mother sit in the back of the cruiser, the little girl consoles her mom. Diamond Reynolds is understandably upset, she doesn’t even know at that point if Philando is dead or alive. Her four-year-old tells her things like:
Mom, please stop cussing and yelling because I don’t want you to get shooted.
I can keep you safe.
I wish this town was safer.
There we have it. A little girl wants her town to be safer from the police. The police. The people paid to protect and serve has become the biggest threat to this little girl’s happiness. What is happening? How can we sit back and allow things like this to happen? How can we stop it? How could the jury watch this video and let that murderer go free?
