Late Tuesday, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Trump to fuck off. Well, OK, not literally. However, he did announce that there will be no ban of transgender military troops at the present time. He stated that those service members will continue carrying on as though Trump didn’t declare his bigotry law.
The transgender ban would not only affect our troops, but it would affect our department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard falls under its jurisdiction. There will be a study performed by the Pentagon to determine if it will allow thousands of transgender troops to continue to serve, whether they will receive medical treatment, or how they will be discharged if it does come to that.
Once the panel reports its recommendations and following my consultation with the secretary of Homeland Security, I will provide my advice to the president concerning implementation of his policy direction. In the interim, current policy with respect to currently serving members will remain in place.
Trump issued his official notification Friday night (while he should have been worrying about Hurricane Harvey). It directed Mattis to study the issue and determine how to implement the direction. The American Civil Liberties Union immediately filed suit against it – and we hope they kick Trump’s ass.
We understand that troops actually coming out as transgender is new to the military. We also understand that this issue is a touchy one for the GOP-led government – we all know that they hate giving “extra” rights to people. However, shouldn’t the issue be that we have transgenders who are signing up to die for our country, and we need to adapt to support them?
This is not an issue of IF they can serve – they most certainly can – some have been serving as transgender for many years. Why are our private parts important unless we put them in or on others against their will? The issue is that people like Trump can’t wrap up the gender issue in nice pink and blue wrapping anymore – and if it’s too difficult, they would rather just dismiss it.
