Let’s get this out of the way: Men’s Rights Activists are some of the worst people in America. They claim to be the flip side of feminism but spend a few minutes listening to them and the absolute hatred of women is inescapable. They’re as threatened by women demanding an end to rape culture as white supremacists were threatened by a black president. Some of them literally advocate making rape legal because women exist for men’s sexual pleasure and that’s it. Seriously.
That being said, it shouldn’t surprise us in the slightest that Betsy DeVos, our Secretary of (mis)Education, has invited some MRAs to testify on the epidemic of campus rape. An epidemic that MRAs say only exists because men are the victims and women are whores who lie about being raped. I wish I was making any of that up:
The coalition is a branch of the National Coalition for Men, which has referred to rape survivor advocates as “anti-male,” and last week it called Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a New York Democrat, a “misandrist” on Twitter. “We are dedicated to bringing attention to the very real and damaging war on men that is being waged in classrooms, in the media, in our courts, on college campuses, in the workplace, even in places of worship,” the group says on its website.
The Education Department said that the men’s rights group will participate in a meeting for “Students who have been falsely accused and disciplined under Title IX,” and is bringing two students and two parents. The group has also posted photos of women it believes made false rape accusations, and suggested half of all sexual assault reports are lies.
An apple to apple comparison would be if Congress invited the KKK to testify about how black people are not really discriminated against in America. If you think I’m being hyperbolic about how disgusting these “men” are, allow me to introduce you to Paul Elam, a leading voice in the MRA movement:
Let’s be clear—this show is not and never will be about the hateful bashing of women, and to be clearer, we’re going to often speak harshly of men … [But] our current gender zeitgeist is one that has promoted and enabled such a degree of female narcissism and entitlement that it has now produced two generations of women that are for the most part, shallow, self-serving wastes of human existence—parasites—semi-human black holes that suck resources and goodwill out of men and squander them on the mindless pursuit of vanity. Is this all women? No, of course not.
Isn’t he a peach? Someone you’d leave alone with your sister or daughter? Jesus, I wouldn’t leave him alone with my female cat. God knows what he’d do to it in the name of fighting back the evils of feminism.
It’s natural that DeVos would seek out the opinion of woman-haters; she is, after all, a Christian fundamentalist. In that world, women are the source of all evil. Literally. And as a fundamentalist, DeVos is going to do anything she can to make higher education as dangerous as possible for women. That’s why she’s directed her people to stop investigating colleges systematically covering up rapes. Why work to make campuses safer when women belong in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant, just like the Bible says?
